Away day to Stanford le Hope
15's finish top of Division 2 after 38-15 win
Stanford 15 Wanstead 38
Wanstead travelled to Stanford in the knowledge that a win would be enough to clinch the top spot in Division 2.
Conditions were windy and cold and the travelling support were well wrapped. Wanstead kicked the game off Harry Turner using the wind to put his kick just 10 meters from the home lines and a fumble took it into touch. The resulting line out was collected by a soaring Ryan Loyal and driven towards the try line. The impressive Alex collected from the back of the maul and powered over the line. The conversation was kicked by Sam with some ease.
Stanford had a game plan and had no intention of laying down. From their kick off they were straight after the ball and the game was set. Stanford’s expert pick and drive hit a wall off Blue and white hoop. Mason, Dylan, Alex, Ronnie and Ziyad tackling and counter rucking. Stanford edged closer to the line inevitably the ball was turned over and the speed and handling of the whole wanstead team kicked into action. A flowing move finished off by Sid.
The pattern continued the Stanford battering ram hitting a brick wall, complimented by some great distance defensive kicking from Harry.
There were to be two more flashing attacking moves from Wanstead’s backs finished off by Andrew and Alex giving Wanstead a convincing 26-0 lead at Half time.
Stanford started the second half with the wind at their backs and continued to wear down the wanstead defence but it was a smooth backs move that finally broke through for Stanford.
Again Wanstead returned through Dylan but two more try’s in quick succession sowed the seed of doubt in the travelling mums minds but Wanstead never changed their game plan and ended the game with the final try. A great flowing move finished off by the ever hard working Mason.
This was a hard fought games both teams were well matched and played with contrasting styles. A credit to both clubs.
Wanstead have finished top of the division 2 and are a real team connecting with each other and taking from their coaches. It’s quite obvious that many have improved from the mid week training and as a result this is a proper squad. Hopefully this commitment from players and coaches will continue into the final Cup games.
