It is with sadness that we report the death of Brad Downing in Holland at the age of 60 from COPD.
Brad, a Yorkshire man, played at scrum half. Brad's father has sent a newspaper clipping (see below) entitled 'Downing Back and Wanstead Open Account' a report of a game against Pinner where Brad scored all of the points in a 6 - 12 victory. Members of the team that day included Martin Baker, Mick Chandler, Pete Cristofoli, Ian Kenlin, Alan Blurton, Pete Jacobs, Tony Crickmore, John Bobsin, Tim Strong, Trevor Stadhart along with veterans Merrick Jones and Roly Davies.
Our condolences to his family.

Brad Downing arrived at the Club out of the blue back in the mid 70’s. I’ve got an idea it was Yellow Pages!
Here was this 20 year old, thin as a rake and smoking like a chimney. But when he played he was clearly outstanding; he was a scrum half who could pass off both hands, kicked like a mule and was generally a class or two above all of us. And then we learnt, final trials for England Schoolboys.
Brad went on to play for Wanstead for 4 seasons and was undoubtedly one of the best players ever to play for us. One memory is of us playing Harlow, them totally outplaying us but not scoring, and then we made a rare foray into their half, got a difficult penalty but Brad put it over with aplomb, and that was the final score, 3-0. The Harlow Captain was totally distraught, near to tears in fact, but Brad was his usual taciturn self. From Yorkshire see.
